Edith Ottoson Swank
Edith Ottoson Swank, 90, of the Town of Portland, passed away peacefully at home with her family present, at 8:03 p.m.Thursday (August 18, 2011).
She was born in Jamestown, N.Y. on January 23, 1921 the daughter of Torwald and Ida Carlson Ottoson.
Edith enjoyed writing poetry including: "Tomorrow is now today, so it will be eternally. When guided in what to say ...Gently, upliftingly-Then comes the shinning ray-which lifts the heart."
Her creative spirit as a singer, poet, artist and friend continues. She and her husband Howard, provided a welcoming home to her family and people from all over the world.
She graduated from Jamestown High School and met her husband at a roller skating arena. They married in Fredonia in 1941 and lived on Berry Road before moving to Portland, N.Y. in 1971.
Her community service included Fredonia Baptist Church, Westfield Christian Science Society, Fredonia School Board, League of Women Voters, Boy Scouts and The Hub Teen Center.
She was able to spend her last years at home with the support of her children, Hospice and other caregivers.
Survivors include her children Linda (Roger) Fox, Steven Swank (Daryl Goldberg), Laurie (Donald) Ashline, David (Penny) Swank; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.,
A private memorial gathering for family and friends will take place at a later date.
The family is requesting no flowers but memorials may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 West Fairmount Ave., Lakewood, N.Y. 14750.
