Winifred "Winnie" A. Vail
Winifred "Winnie" A. Vail , 91, of Lakewood, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fl.,died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday (October 27, 2010) in the Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing.
She was born on January 7, 1919 in Sugar Grove, Pa. the daughter of Glenn and Myrtle Thompson Washburg.
Winnie was a graduate of Falconer High School and Jamestown Business College. She was employed by New York State Co-Operative Extension, retiring in 1975.
She, along with her husband, were avid outdoors people and managed an outfitters camp in Northern Ontario, Canada where they spent summers camping and fishing.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Port Charlotte, Florida and a past member of the Ross Grange #305. In earlier years she was very active in Girl Scouts.
Survivors include a son, Richard C. Vail, and a daughter, Eileen L. Allen, Lakewood, three grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Ciancio, West Ellicott, Michael R. Vail, Charlotte, N.C. and Jonathan J. Allen, Lakewood and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, Nelson S. Vail, whom she married on September 9, 1939 in Lakewood, and who died on October 12, 1997. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Atkins and Gladys Stark, and by an infant brother.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
